December Game of the Month – Survive!

The Game of the Month series highlights one of the many games in our library at Ravenwood Castle. We will briefly describe the game, how to play it, and why we like it. This week’s blog post is written by our Assistant Innkeeper, Dina Musaelyan.

Game: Survive: Escape from Atlantis!

Publisher: Stronghold Games

Imagine a game with sharks, whales and sea monsters. Add the slowly disintegrating island of Atlantis, and you have Survive: Escape from Atlantis! by Stronghold Games.

In Survive, the player controls ten Meeples (little wooden people), each of which has a number between 1 and 6 on the base representing that Meeple’s victory point value. The Meeples are placed on an island made up of sand, jungle and stone tiles. The twist? The tiles, and the island itself, are sinking!

It is the player’s job to get their Meeples to the safety of the nearby land masses. Meeples can escape the island on a boat or by swimming to shore. Be careful in the water though, the seas are filled with sharks, whales and sea serpents!

A player moves a Meeple up to three spaces on their turn, and then chooses an island tile to flip over. On the back of the tile is an image, which may summon a shark or a whale. Finally, the player rolls a die and takes control of a shark, whale or serpent. This is a great opportunity to move these threats away from the player’s own Meeple, and perhaps cause a little havoc for the other players’ Meeples!

Designed for 2 to 4 players, Survive makes for a great family game. After all, if escaping a sinking island wasn’t enough fun on its own, what kid wouldn’t love directing a shark or sea monster to eat their parent’s pieces?
