The Perfect Fall Trip To Hocking Hills

When the leaves begin changing, few places in Ohio are as breathtaking as Hocking Hills, making fall one of the most sought-after times to visit. Although, as you look ahead on your calendar to start planning, there’s one important decision before the details of your trip come together: where should you stay?

Stay Somewhere Memorable

A great vacation begins with a great place to stay. Located near the heart of Hocking Hills, Ravenwood Castle offers a lodging experience unlike any other! We have 21 unique accommodations and you can choose to stay in a Castle Room, Medieval Village Cottage, or Huntsman’s Hollow Cabin. After a day spent exploring, there’s something magical about returning to the Castle!

We currently have five onsite scavenger hunts loved by guests of all ages. You’ll explore the nooks and crannies of the Castle and figure out what some of our trickier clues really mean!

If you’re up for more challenges, we have a 150+ board game library which truly does offer something for every type of gamer. We welcome guests to play in the Great Hall, Library, Pub, or back in the comfort of their room. Not in the mood to compete? Try something cooperative like Castle Panic or Onitama!

Each morning, you will enjoy a complimentary breakfast buffet in the Great Hall from 8:30 AM – 10:00 AM. In the afternoons and evenings, the Raven’s Roost Pub is open daily for overnight guests and offers a wide variety of Pub fare and beverages. On weekends, we also offer Great Hall Dinners!

Morning Adventures

Starting your day early is one of the best tips we have when visiting the area in the fall.  Not only will you enjoy crisp, cool morning air, but smaller crowds! If you’re out extra early and are worried about fueling up, we have to-go coffee cups at the Castle so you can grab and go!

  • Old Man’s Cave: No Hocking Hills itinerary would be complete without a visit to Old Man’s Cave. This is considered a moderate hike that takes about an hour to complete, with plenty of beautiful views during the mile-long trek. During the peak fall season, every turn reveals another postcard-worthy view.
  • Ash Cave: If you’re looking for an easier hike with maximum scenery, Ash Cave is hard to beat. The short trail (a little over half a mile long) leads to one of Ohio’s largest recess caves and a seasonal waterfall surrounded by brilliant autumn foliage.
  • Hocking Hills Scenic Byway: This 26-mile journey sends drivers through some of the most scenic regions of the Hocking Hills. Take a leisurely morning drive and take in the sights!

Afternoon Activities

After a morning spent exploring waterfalls, caves, and scenic overlooks, slow things down with a few local favorites. Whether you’re searching for the perfect cup of coffee or trying your hand at a new craft, here are a few ways to spend a relaxing fall afternoon.

  • Coffee & Antiquing: Need an afternoon pick me up after a hike? Enjoy seasonal specials at at OASIS Coffee Shop & More in Rockbridge, then browse the area’s stores in search of one-of-a-kind keepsakes! Spring Street Antique Mall and Appalachian Art and Craft Market are just two of the stores in the shopping plaza near OASIS and are perfect to peruse while drinking a Pumpkin Spice Latte!
  • Enjoy A Leisurely Train Ride: Take in the fall colors from a unique perspective aboard the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. The HVSR offers a plethora of different rides, and two just for the season! Check out the October Fall Foliage Rides or the Nelsonville Halloween Train.
  • Unwine-d and Relax: After a day of adventure, settle in at Revolution Rockbridge, a family-owned winery just a short drive from the Castle. Sip handcrafted wines made right onsite, enjoy live music on select weekends, and relax with friends inside or outside on the extensive outdoor patio.
